Current Status

Google Domains is not an active domain registrar for new purchases. Squarespace acquired Google Domains registrations and the associated customer accounts in September 2023. Migrated customers now manage their domains, DNS settings, ownership, and billing in Squarespace.

This page is retained because people still search for the former product and need accurate migration guidance. It should not be read as a recommendation to register a new domain with Google Domains.

What Existing Customers Should Do

1. Sign in to Squarespace with the email address previously used for Google Domains.
2. Open the domains dashboard to review the domain, renewal date, billing details, and DNS records.
3. Verify forwarding and custom nameserver settings. Some former Google forwarding features may require updated DNS records after migration.
4. If you want another registrar, unlock the domain and request its transfer authorization code from Squarespace.

Squarespace documents several legacy features that are not supported after migration, including Dynamic DNS updates and renewal of Google-provided ACME certificates. Check those settings before assuming an old configuration still operates unchanged.

Pricing

There is no current Google Domains price because Google no longer sells the service. Migrated domains renew under Squarespace's pricing, which varies by top-level domain. Compare the actual renewal price—not only a first-year promotion—before keeping or transferring a domain.

Alternatives for New Registrations

• Cloudflare Registrar: Strong fit when you already use Cloudflare DNS and want at-cost registration pricing, subject to supported TLDs.
• Porkbun: Often attractive for transparent retail pricing and a broad TLD catalog.
• Namecheap: A familiar general-purpose registrar with a large catalog; compare renewal and add-on prices.
• Squarespace Domains: The simplest path for migrated customers who are satisfied with current billing and management.

No registrar is universally cheapest. Check renewal cost, WHOIS privacy, DNSSEC support, transfer policy, support quality, and the price of any email or privacy add-ons.

Pros

• Existing registrations were migrated rather than abandoned.
• Customers can continue managing DNS and transfer domains away if preferred.
• Squarespace provides a documented recovery path for accounts created during migration.

Cons

• The original Google Domains product no longer accepts new registrations.
• Some legacy features did not carry over with identical behavior.
• Pricing and account management now follow Squarespace policies.

Verdict

If you had a Google Domain, use Squarespace to manage it or transfer it to a registrar that better matches your renewal-cost and DNS requirements. If you are buying a new domain, compare active registrars directly; Google Domains is no longer an option.
